Canal + & BeIN Sports strike agreement with LFP over TV rights amid COVID-19 disruption

The LFP, the governing body of French club football, this afternoon announced agreements with the two major broadcasters of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 action, BeIN Sports and Canal +, over TV rights payments amid the ongoing COVID-19 disruption of the 2019/20 campaign.

In a press release, the LFP thanked both BeIN and Canal + for their cooperation, without providing any details on the nature of the agreement struck:

“This agreement takes into account the unprecedented situation facing clubs, the LFP and French football at the moment, while beIN [& Canal +] is also facing extremely difficult circumstances.”

L’Équipe report that in April, Canal + did not pay a €110m bill including tax due per their contract, including €43m due for matches already played.

BeIN Sports, the other major broadcaster of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, have also not made their April payments, €42m due, including €15m due for matches already having taken place.

The deal struck today has seen a compromise reached, which will see Canal + pay €37m immediately. BeIN Sports will similarly pay slightly less than the amount due for matches having already taken place in April.

The next due payment is in June to the LFP, totalling €140m due by a combination of Canal + and BeIN Sports.
