– Nigel McGuinness and Mauro Ranallo welcome us to the final episode of WWE NXT before this weekend’s massive weekend in New Orleans. We head to the ring as we’re kicking things off with action right away.
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – Final Round
PETE DUNNE & RODERICK STRONG vs. THE AUTHORS OF PAIN
The match was already underway as we came back from commercial, with the Authors of Pain bullying Pete Dunne all around the ring. Nothing pretty or fancy here, as they just alternated in with relatively frequent tags and beat down on the WWE UK Champion with clubbing blows and kicks. After what felt like an eternity of purgatory Dunne hit a wicked DDT on Akam that gave him some space and made the hot tag to Strong.
Roddy came in like a house on fire and knocked one of his opponents off the apron while lighting up the other with quick, stiff kicks all over the body. He managed to get Rezar up in the air and sending him crashing down with a huge Olympic slam, but it wasn’t enough to get the pin. Dunne tagged back in and came off the top rope with an elbow drop, but Akam made the save at the last second. They managed to isolate the big man and hit him with the double team finisher they used on Sanity last week to advance to the finals, but even that wasn’t enough to put the match away. Strong got all kinds of fired up, but the two ran right into a pair of enormous boots – all four men down. The Undisputed Era came running out of nowhere and attacked all four guys, causing the referee to call for the bell.
Results: No Contest
– NXT General Manager William Regal makes his way out and says that it’s very smart of The Undisputed Era to think that if there’s no winner of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, they won’t have to compete or defend the titles at NXT Takeover: New Orleans. It’s especially crafty because Bobby Fish is injured and won’t be able to compete this weekend, but unfortunately for them that’s not how this is going down. Regal announces a triple threat match for Takeover, where the winners will not only take home the Dusty Cup, but become the new NXT Tag Team Champions.
– A video package airs for the NXT North American Championship ladder match at Takeover featuring brief statements from all six men in the bout.
KAIRI SANE vs. VANESSA BORNE
Borne has some excellent entrance music. She’s still pretty green, but she has excellent entrance music. Kairi controlled early on with strikes and kicks to get the crowd fired up. Borne dropped with a brutal flapjack to take over, then sent her crashing into the corner, her head bouncing off the bottom turnbuckle. Kairi eventually battled back and hitting a sliding forearm shot in the corner, went up top and came down with a flying crossbody. She tried for her signature elbow drop but Borne had it scouted and hit the ropes to send her opponent crashing down. They battled back and forth in the ropes until Sane caught her hanging with a double foot stomp. Insane Elbow connects for the 1-2-3.
Winner: Kairi Sane
– Lacey Evans cuts a backstage promo calling herself the First Lady of NXT. Her gimmick is that she’s a proper, working-class mother and United States Marine with a bad Dixieland accent campaigning against “societal trash”, in this case Nikki Cross of Sanity.
– William Regal is walking backstage when Adam Cole shows up screaming at him because he has to compete TWICE this weekend at NXT Takeover. Regal says he three options. First, Cole can suck it up and compete in both matches. Two, Kyle O’Reilly can fight on his own and see how goes. Or third, Cole can take himself out of the NXT North American Championship ladder match.
LARS SULLIVAN vs. KILLIAN DAIN
As expected the match was a hellacious slugfest from the opening bell. Lars fired off with big clubbing blows, shaking the entire ring, until Dain came right back with a giant kick to the chest that sent the big man rolling to the floor. After a commercial break Sullivan was beating his opponent with overhand blows and cranking away at his neck. Dain started throwing punches of his own and blocked a Freak Accident, firing off with explosive forearm strikes to finally take Lars off his feet. A giant running senton connected and he went to the second rope looking for the Vader Bomb, but came up empty crashing and burning to the mat.
After another back and forth this time it’s Sullivan who begins to climb the ropes. Dain went up to meet him and the two brawled for positioning until they both collided with nasty headbutts to send them BOTH flying all the way to the floor on the outside. Velveteen Dream ran out of nowhere and climbed to the top rope, doing a little posing and taunting while both big men were still down. Adam Cole ran out and got in his face, followed by EC3 who blew the roof off the arena. Finally Ricochet ran out to a massive reaction and did a backflip off the ropes. We got a big staredown between all six guys as the show faded to black…
