The 59-year-old was not a popular managerial appointment among Magpies fans last year and endured a rocky start with just one Premier League victory in his first seven games in charge.

However, Bruce has turned things around with Newcastle winning three of their last four league matches, prior to their clash with West Ham, to move away from relegation trouble.

And former Chelsea striker Cascarino has been impressed by Bruce’s impact, especially after losing top scorers Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon to Leicester and Dalian Yifang, respectively, last summer.

He told talkSPORT: “They’re a side that’s been well drilled by a manager who knows how to go around a football match.

“He’s got a lot out of what he’s been left with by Rafa [Benitez]. Remember, he lost Perez and Rondon.

“He lost 30 goals when he joined and that was a big void for that football club – and yet he’s managed to find a way of getting that team, pulling it together and they’ve delivered.

“They’ve had a centre-forward who isn’t scoring goals in Joelinton, but have still won football matches.”
