Goergen set school record during SCSU’s 42-3 win over Mary
#1 St. Cloud State University (16-1, 7-0 NSIC) charged to a 42-3 victory over the University of Mary (7-8, 2-5 NSIC) on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Halenbeck Hall. The day featured a pre-match salute to the 12 seniors participating in their final home dual at SCSU and it was capped by senior Austin Goergen setting a new team record for career pins.
The nation’s top ranked NCAA Division II wrestler at 285-pounds, Goergen was dominating in a 2:03 fall against Mary’s Dom Tudor in the final bout of the day. The pin was Goergen’s 64th fall as a Husky and pushes him past SCSU standout Tad Merritt, who tallied 63 pins during his career from 2008-12. Goergen currently owns a 22-0 record this season for the Huskies.
In addition to the record setting effort by Goergen, the Huskies clinched a share of the NSIC championship thanks to a victory by Minnesota State Mankato over Augustana. Both MSU and Augie now have one NSIC loss apiece this season, while the Huskies are undefeated in NSIC action. The Huskies can win the NSIC title outright on Thursday, Feb. 17 with a win at Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D.
