Schools And Colleges In 28 Tamil Nadu Districts Shut As Heavy Rains Batter The State

Schools and colleges in as many as 23 districts, including Chennai, have been asked to remain shut for Friday and Saturday due to the ongoing heavy rains in the state.

The Tamil Nadu school education department on Friday declared holidays for educational institutions after the IMD forecast of heavy rains.

IMD predicts more rain in Tamil Nadu

The weather department has also issued a red alert for Ranipet, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram districts for November 11. A Red alert was issued in Dindigul, Theni, and The Nilgiris districts on November 12. This is following a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours.

Heavy to very heavy rains and extremely heavy rains are likely in some places in these districts on November 11 and 12.

Wind speed is expected to be 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph along southern Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu Puducherry and Sri Lankan coasts, the Gulf of Mannar and the adjoining Comorin area.

Chennai city and surrounding areas are expected to receive thunderstorms and lighting along with heavy to very heavy rains in the next 48 hours. An orange alert has been issued for the city in the next 48 hours.

 “The Low-Pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast with associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric levels persists. It is likely to become more marked during the next 24 hours,” the IMD said in a tweet.

Waterlogging in Chennai other areas

Intermittent showers began on the night of Thursday and later intensified in several regions of the State, leading to waterlogging, localised floods and disruption in vehicular movement.

Dams nearing storage capacity 

Several suburbs of Chennai, including Iyyappanthangal, Porur and Mangad, are inundated with water following the release of water from Chembarambakkam lake.

Officials of Kancheepuram district said that as more rains are expected, pumping could not be done to drain out water and would eventually drain out.

Tiruvallur district authorities said the Kannankottai Thervoy Kandigai reservoir has reached its full level of 36.61 ft and the outflow stood at 130 cusecs.

The release from Puzhal dam is increased to 500 cusecs increased from 100. Similarly, other reservoirs too have been witnessing copious inflows and Redhills has touched 82.97 per centage of its 3,300 mcft capacity. Water is released from reservoirs as per regulations.

NDRF deploys rescue team 

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Arakkonam has deployed four teams in Tamil Nadu in anticipation of heavy rain and flooding. The NDRF has been deployed in Theni, Dindigul, Nilgiris and Ranipet.

In a statement, the NDRF said that all four teams are self-contained and equipped with flood rescue equipment, collapsed structure search and rescue equipment and advanced communication equipments. The statement added that their control room will function 24/7 and monitor the rain. There is also constant communication with the NDRF headquarters and Tamil Nadu state administration for immediate response in case the situation worsens.
