Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez was summoned on Tuesday for the trial of Neymar’s controversial transfer to Barcelona from Santos in 2013.
While testifying before the law via video conferencing, Pérez admitted that Los Blancos were interested in signing the Brazilian ten years ago but it was Neymar’s desire to join Barcelona over Real Madrid. As quoted by AS, the Spaniard said,
“The players go where they want, and Neymar wanted to go to Barcelona. We were interested in him ten years ago or something like that. But I know it because of the general sports management of Real Madrid, not because I was important in any type of negotiation.”
Just before Pérez’s testimony, the former football director of FC Barcelona, Raúl Sanllehí, was reportedly heard stating that the Catalan club had reached an agreement with Santos for the transfer of Neymar for €45 million plus €10 million more in variables in the summer of 2011. Sanllehí testified, “We shook hands on a Friday, but on Monday they called us to tell us that Madrid had offered five million more. We could not accept that, because we had already closed the agreement.”
