Norristown Plans To Rebuild Historic Bandshell After Fire

NORRISTOWN, PA — The greater Norristown community is planning to rebuild the historic Fire Chief’s Memorial Bandshell, as organizers and officials work to adapt pre-scheduled events to new locations.

The bandshell, which had stood for more than a century, Elmwood Park Zoo was destroyed during a fire on Aug. 28.

The cause remains under investigation, although officials said that the fire may have originated in nearby porta-potties before hopping over to the roof of the bandshell. The fire grew to a two alarm blaze before it could be extinguished.

“Municipal Council is devastated by the loss of the Fire Chief’s Memorial Bandshell at Elmwood Park,” Norristown Council President Tom Lepera said. “For over 100 years the bandshell has provided entertainment to the Norristown community, hosting local bands during our summer concert series, celebrating our country’s independence for the Fourth of July, and enjoying other community events throughout the year.”

Lepera said that the council and Norristown leaders would “work quickly” to rebuild what had been lost.
