A late Russell Canouse goal helped DC vault the Montreal Impact and into the sixth and final postseason spot
DC United vaulted the Montreal Impact into the sixth and final postseason spot on Saturday thanks to a late win over FC Dallas.
A late goal from Rusell Canouse led DC to a 1-0 win while extending the team’s unbeaten run to seven consecutive matches. FC Dallas, meanwhile, saw a six-game unbeaten streak snapped, although the club remains atop the Western Conference.
While Wayne Rooney created two of the better looks on the night, the match remained scoreless until Canouse’s 86th minute finish. On the end of a Rooney free kick, Canouse hit his initial shot off the crossbar before finishing his second chance, sealing three points for DC at Audi Field.
The win gave DC a one-point lead over the Impact, who have played 32 games to DC’s 31. Rooney, Canouse and co. return to action on Wednesday to make up that game in hand as they take on Toronto FC, who will miss the postseason following last week’s loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
