The Reds recorded a club-record 97 points – enough to be crowned champions in every top flight season bar two – and lost only one league game all campaign, and yet they were of course still beaten to the title by Manchester City by just a single point.
Supporters and players’ agony was soon forgotten – somewhat, at least – as they lifted the club’s sixth European Cup just weeks later.
But their yearning for that all-so elusive league crown – having last been league champions 29 years ago – will surely be back as soon as the Reds take to the field in their opener against Southampton on August 17.
