The Liverpool defender hailed Huddersfield’s performance, admitting they made it hard for the Reds, but felt his side did well to take the win

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson says his side’s battling 1-0 win at Huddersfield proves they are good enough to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Mohamed Salah scored the only goal at the John Smith’s Stadium in a scrappy game of few chances.

Liverpool were far from their fluid best, but held on for the win that maintains their unbeaten start to the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are second in the Premier League, level on points with leaders Manchester City with seven wins and two draws from their opening nine matches.

Robertson says the character and resilience shown by Liverpool is further evidence that they are ready to push their title rivals all the way.

“We weren’t at our best but these are the games you have to win if you want to challenge and we’ll play a lot better,” the Scotland international told reporters after the match.

“Yes of course, there’s a bit of relief. It was a tough game against a very good side.

“It’s important you come to these places and you win the game.

“Luckily we managed to get our noses in front and we’ve seen it out from there. We can play a lot better, but they made it hard.”

Robertson was also full of praise for Huddersfield, who put in a brave battling display despite ultimately suffering their sixth defeat of the season.

The Terriers remain second bottom and without a league win this campaign, but Robertson feels they will soon start picking up points if they continue to perform like they did on Saturday.

“We weren’t surprised by Huddersfield at all. We did our analysis and in our meetings, the analysis team and our manager were saying they were a better team than the points suggest and I think they proved that.

“They played very well and they’re probably a wee bit unfortunate to be where they are in the table.

“I think they will have a positive season. They just need to get up and running and hopefully they will do that, but for us it was about getting the three points.”
