Lemont Resident Publishes Second Book Of Poetry

LEMONT, IL — Lemont resident Dane Hamann recently published his second book of poetry, entitled “Parsing the Echoes.”

The book, published by Main Street Rag Publishing Company, was released in March and “is a collection of poems about works of art,” Hamann told Patch.

Hamann and his wife moved to Lemont about 10 years ago, and he said he was especially drawn to the town’s outdoor qualities, and that “an appreciation of the environment and landscape play significant roles in my writing,” he told Patch.

He said that he has been interested in writing since he was young, but poetry wasn’t something he considered until graduate school.

“Something just clicked for me after I wrote my first poem for a creative writing workshop in one of my core courses,” Hamann said.

He went on to earn a Master’s degree in poetry from Northwestern University, and works as an editor at a textbook publisher. He is also the Poet-in-Residence for Derailleur.net, which is a literary-focused online newsletter that covers professional cycling.

“I believe poetry has helped me professionally and intellectually, as it provides an understanding of language as well as a creative outlet,” he said.

Hamann said that he adheres to the principle of “writing what you know.”

His first book, “A Thistle Stuck in the Throat of the Sun,” is “about connecting with both the natural and built environments,” he said. Hamann used his experiences as a runner to write his first book.

His second book, “Parsing the Echoes,” is about works of art from landscape to abstract and surrealism “that have really made an impact on me and my own artistic pursuits,” he told Patch.

Hamann’s works are available for purchase on his website.
