ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — After residents narrowly voted for a $75 million bond referendum to fund all-day kindergarten in Arlington Heights School District 25 last year, the Village has approved expansions in six elementary school buildings. At the March 6 Arlington Heights Village Board meeting, trustees gave the thumbs up to additions at Greenbrier and Windsor.
The latest approval follows those voted for last month at Dryden, Olive-Mary Stitt, Patton and Westgate, for a total of 25 new classrooms. Full-day kindergarten in District 25 is scheduled to launch in August 2024. The district said it will also address aging facility needs with the money. The referendum passed by only 50 votes last June.

As he did last month, Ryan Schulz, director of facilities management for District 25, addressed the Village Board about why expansion is needed at Greenbrier and Windsor.
“It is primarily driven by the full-day kindergarten enrollment that will be coming to the school and based on the number of sections the school will need going forward into the future,” Schulz said of why the project is needed at Greenbrier.

He said two additional classrooms are needed at 2330 N. Verde Drive with an expected enrollment increase in the next five years. Currently, classrooms share a single section between morning and afternoon kindergarten classes. The project would add a corridor on the first story in the southwestern end of the building for the two classrooms, where an expansion was also done in 2017. Additionally, Schulz said the new space will be built in a way to accommodate two more classrooms on the second story if needed in the future.
“We don’t have any anticipation that is needed at any time in the near future. We’re just setting the building up because we’re starting to run out of actual square footage and space at this site,” Schulz said.
At Windsor, two new kindergarten classrooms are also needed as part of an expansion project at 1315 E. Miner St., according to Schulz. Similar to Greenbriar, the two new classrooms would be located in a southeastern corridor of the school that saw expansion in 2017. The expansion at Greenbriar will not utilize a second story, but will also be able to accommodate new classrooms in the future if needed.
