First Indian Born WWE Signee On Fighting Her Husband’s Male Dominating Ideology

The Hindustan Times has published a new piece on WWE’s first Indian born signee and Mae Young Classic competitor, Kavita Devi, and her battles also taking place outside the ring.

The article notes Devi was married off to Bhijwara in Uttar Pradesh in 2009, and that ever since signing with WWE she has had to battle issues with her husband’s misogyny, patriarchal beliefs, and refusal to accept that his wife has become more well known than she is.

“I faced a lot of problems to be where I am today. My husband continues to live by old male-dominating ideology. Even today, he can’t digest if I am getting more respect and success than him. He gets angry at me for getting more response from public. I tell him that my success is not just my own, but of our entire family. My in-laws expect me to do household chores—jhadoo pocha bartan,” said Devi.

Despite the issues she faces with her husband, Devi noted that her parents have remained very supportive of her pro wrestling goals despite criticism from others.

“My parents supported me in my journey and did not listen to people. They took loans to fund my training. Now, I will work hard to fulfill all their wishes,” Devi said.
