CHERRY HILL, NJ — A Cherry Hill production facility that prints several newspapers, including the Courier-Post, will shut down in the coming months. As a result, 139 employees have been laid off.
The Courier-Post and its parent company, Gannett, informed production staff Wednesday of the upcoming closure. The layoffs will go into effect June 23, according to a notice shared by the state labor department.
The facility handles printing and packaging for several local and regional newspapers, including the Courier-Post, Burlington County Times and Vineland Daily Journal. Gannett owns all three publications, along with hundreds of others around the nation.

Production of all three newspapers will move to Gannett’s facility in Rockaway, according to the Courier-Post. Other publications currently printed in Cherry Hill will be produced in Wilmington, Delaware.
Print subscribers shouldn’t notice any changes to the delivery of their newspapers, Courier-Post’s executive editor said in an article posted by the news outlet.

“The Courier-Post and our South Jersey papers are committed to delivering local coverage that impacts the communities we serve,” Audrey Harvin said. “While we work in a challenging environment as our industry evolves, our commitment to readers does not change.”
The printing facility is located on Cuthbert Boulevard, next to the newsroom that handles coverage for the Courier-Post, Burlington County Times and Daily Journal. The future of the printing plant has not been determined, according to the Courier-Post.
The upcoming closure comes amid an ongoing shift to digital readership that has prompted media outlets to shut down or consolidate printing operations.
Meanwhile, Gannett cut its workforce by more than 50 percent since merging with GateHouse in 2019. The Virginia-based corporation went from 21,255 following the merger, to 11,200 at the end of 2022, according to Axios.

Gannett’s assets include several regional newspapers throughout New Jersey, including the Asbury Park Press, the Middlesex County-based Home News Tribune, and the Morris County-based Daily Record.
