The French midfielder sustained the injury against Watford towards the end of last season but has yet to fully recover from the problem.
Kante has missed just ten of 152 Premier League matches since 2015 during his time with Leicester and Chelsea – but it is now clear the volume of games he has played in is taking its toll.
The World Cup winner hasn’t featured at all in Chelsea’s pre-season schedule but is facing a race against time to be ready for the new campaign as he continues rehabilitation on his knee.
A Chelsea statement read: “N’Golo Kante has travelled back to the UK to continue his rehabilitation for an injury connected to the knee problem he sustained at the end of last season.”
The 28-year-old was absent as Chelsea were defeated 1-0 to Kawasaki Frontale on Saturday, despite training with the squad the day before with his teammates.
Kante has been a major success since joining Chelsea from Leicester in 2016, helping the club win the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League in three seasons at Stamford Bridge.
