The England international had been carrying a hamstring injury leading up to the game but was deemed fit enough to start.
He had picked up the knock in Dortmund’s Champions League match with Inter Milan during the week.
Manager Lucien Favre had seen enough from Sancho just before half-time and replaced him with Raphael Guerreiro with his side 1-0 down.
After the game, Favre confirmed that the 20-year-old was not suffering from an injury but he was taken off for tactical reasons.
“He was not injured, he trained yesterday. I had to go on what I was seeing and, to be honest, it was not good enough,” the Dortmund manager said.
