Reds hold on against spirited Sunwolves

The Reds have recorded their third win at home for the season to defeat the Sunwolves 35-25 despite a spirited performance from the visitors.

After a few slow starts in recent weeks the Queensland Reds dominated the opening stages of the match to jump out to an early lead.

Curtis Browning continued to make the most of his opportunities since Jake Schatz went down with an injury to score a double to help seal the victory.

The Reds received a major boost before the match when Samu Kerevi was rushed into the starting side after recovering from a broken hand ahead of schedule. Kerevi continued where he left off before injury struck, to finish with over 100 run metres.

Browning’s first came from a break at the ruck in the 15th minute, to extend the Reds lead to 10-0.

While the Reds controlled 65% of possession in the opening 20 minutes, it was the Sunwolves who started to show some flair, leading to their first try minutes later from Japanese international Derek Carpenter.

The man being spoken about all week was Japanese superstar Ayumu Goromaru and he was solid with the boo,t kicking three conversions and two penalties but only lasted under 60 minutes, going off with a shoulder injury.

James Slipper darted over for a rare try in the 29th minute to extend the Reds’ lead in the opening half but the Sunwolves continued to chip away to narrow the margin to three points at the break.

The Reds jumped out of the blocks early to in the second half as Browning had his second inside the opening two minutes but the Sunwolves continued to press. Carpenter had his second in the 51st minute after some great counter attacking play from the Sunwolves.
