Barkley fluffed his lines in the crucial moment, firing his spot kick onto the bar, but Frank Lampard has confirmed the England midfielder is his designated penalty taker when on the pitch.

He was only introduced shortly before Chelsea were awarded the penalty, which was given following a VAR review, and many were surprised neither Jorginho nor Willian were on penalty duties.

But while the latter pair do take spot kicks, Lampard says Barkley was correct to take the ball for the effort from 12 yards.

“Ross is the penalty taker,” said Lampard. “He took some in pre-season and he has been when he has started, and he was today when he came on.
