CONNECTICUT — The venues were packed, the crowds were enthusiastic and the competition was terrific as the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) crowned 16 team champions this past weekend in boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball, field hockey and girls swimming.
Two championship contests were decided in overtime, and a third came down to an intense 11-10 penalty kick shootout. No school won multiple titles; 16 different schools claimed state crowns.
Five teams won championships for at least the second straight year: Old Saybrook boys soccer (5th), St. Joseph girls soccer (3rd), RHAM volleyball (3rd), North Branford field hockey (3rd) and Darien volleyball (2nd). Bacon Academy girls soccer was the lone team to claim its program’s first-ever state title.
