Sania Mirza To Call Time On Career At Dubai Meet In February

Sania Mirza will call time on her career at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship in February, as per PTI. 

She has made informed the WTA of her decision. 

Sania planned to retire at the end of 2022, but an elbow injury ruled her out of the US Open and she did not play since August.

The 36-year-old is married to Shoaib Malik and has been living in Dubai for over 10 years.

“I was going to stop right after the WTA Finals, because we were going to make the WTA Finals, but I tore my tendon in my elbow right before US Open so I had to pull out of everything,” she said while speaking to wtatennis.com. 

“And honestly, the person that I am, I like to do things on my own terms. So I don’t want to be forced out by injury. So I’ve been training,” she added. 

Sania has won six majors – three in doubles and three in mixed doubles.

She will play in the Australian Open with Anna Danilina. 

“The plan is to try and retire in Dubai during the DubaiDuty Free Tennis Championships,” she went on to say. 

The Dubai event begins on February 19.
