WWE has been using “The Man” as a nickname for Becky Lynch over the past year, as a result Ric Flair is threatening legal action due to his beliefs WWE is ripping him off.
According to Flair, he’s been referring to himself as The Man since 1981. In addition, he even holds the trademark for his legendary catchphrase, “To be the man, you gotta beat the man.”
In a conversation with TMZ Sports, Ric Flair stated he attempted to arrange a private arrangement that would allow WWE usage of the nickname. However, his attempts were shot down by the company. Furthermore, he escalated the issue to WWE executive, Triple H but no resolution came from that.
On August 26, a application was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to own, “The Man”, specifically when it comes to terminology in professional wrestling. As a result, his daughter, WWE Superstar Charlotte Flair is upset with him due to the filing.
Ric Flair claims if awarded the trademark, he has no problem with Becky Lynch using the nickname as long as WWE compensates him. He further clarifies he has no issue with Becky Lynch and supports the WWE’s women’s division, but business is business.
