Liverpool left sweating on Milner injury after Man City clash

The key Reds man pulled up off the ball in the first half of his side’s encounter with his former club, with the extent of his problem not yet known

Liverpool midfielder James Milner faces an anxious wait to find out the seriousness of an injury he picked up during his side’s Premier League encounter with champions Manchester City at Anfield.

The Reds star hobbled off in the first half against his former club after pulling up with a hamstring complaint off the ball and was replaced by Naby Keita after just half an hour.

Jurgen Klopp told reporters when offering a fitness update afterwards: “I asked him ‘big one?’ and he said ‘I don’t think so, but big enough to go off’.”

The 32-year-old has been in exceptional form for Klopp’s side this season, having carried across his inspirational form that saw him help Liverpool to the Champions League final last term into the new campaign.

In nine combined Premier League appearances, Milner has scored one and provided two assists, as well as making 10 interceptions and 51 recoveries to date.

Any prolonged lay-off however would be a major blow for Liverpool as they look to keep up their flying start to the season and repeat their European heroics.

They are unbeaten in the top flight and, though they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea, also recorded an impressive 3-2 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Milner arrived on Merseyside from City where he spent a five-season spell, winning all four major domestic honours.

He initially began his career with his hometown club of Leeds United in November 2002 before spending spells with Swindon Town, Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

Between 2009 and 2016, he won 61 caps for England, scoring his only international goal against Moldova in a 2014 World Cup qualification game.

He was a member of the Three Lions squad for both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups and the 2012 and 2016 European Championships.
