R Ashwin says he is surprised that Nathan Lyon doesn’t play in IPL and believes the offspinner who is so good at stopping Shubman Gill from stepping down the track can star in IPL.
“Nathan Lyon doesn’t play much BBL or ODI. I don’t know the thinking behind it. With impact player, there will be great chance for Nathan Lyon,” Ashwin told on his YouTube channel.

“On pitches like Chennai, the ball turns with over-spin (Lyon’s preferred mode of releasing the off break). In Mumbai you will get bounce. We saw it in Test matches, his lengths was superb. He will get in base price, the thinking has to change.
Consider Shubman Gill. When you lift your arm (as a spinner), Gill would come charging down the pitch. Rohit Sharma steps out superbly. Cheteshwar Pujara too steps out superbly though these days he gives cues when he will do that. Yes, the pitches in Tests against Australia did help spin.
But Lyon never allowed any of these batsmen to step down. I was watching keenly. He was expecting them to step down but with good air speed, he never allowed them. Foreign spinners generally do find it difficult to get in the playing XI in IPL but with impact players rule, things can be different.”
