Naperville Record For People Wearing Underpants On Their Heads At Risk

NAPERVILLE, IL — A museum in St. Louis aims to take down Naperville’s underpants record.

The pride of Naperville may not be on the line, but the 2012 Guinness World Record for gathering the most people with underpants on their heads has been a fun hometown fact people can throw out at parties.

And let’s be clear. Crowns of briefs, bikinis and boxers aren’t high, or even low, couture in Naperville. Twelve years ago, 270 children, teens and adults put underwear on their heads and posed outside of Anderson’s Bookshop to welcome “Captain Underpants” author Dav Pilkey.

The plan by City Museum in St. Louis to de-pants — err, dethrone — Naperville involves getting 314 people to wear undies on their heads for at least a minute and then smile for a few photos. The stunt is to celebrate 314 Day, a play on the city’s area code, and a promotion of everything that’s going on in St. Louis.

The wearing o’ the underwear starts at 2 p.m. local time in the Vault Room, and the official count should be completed in a half hour.

The museum also happens to have an exhibit, The Science of Guinness World Records, which looks at the “fascinating people achieving strange and incredible feats” in the quest for a Guinness World Record.

Those feats include eating almost nothing but McDonald’s Big Mac sandwiches for the past 50 or so years. Don Gorske, a retired prison guard in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, has eaten 34,000 Big Macs since 1972. No one has even come close to his record, and he doubts they will try.

Lee Redmond, who lives in Salt Lake City, held the record for the longest fingernails from 2008 until 2022, when she lost them in an accident and Minnesotan Diana Armstrong claimed the record. In March 2022, her fingernails measured 42 feet, 10.4 inches.

Other world records are more inspiring, recognizing achievements in academics, athletics and business.
