YORKTOWN, NY — The town of Yorktown remains confident that the recent problems with garbage collection is being resolved.
Supervisor Tom Diana told Patch that, due to the massive flooding and the subsequent cleanup and recovery, the town is going to give the contractor — Competitive Carting Corporation — “a couple of extra days.”
The issue of refuse left on sidewalks began last week, and the town decided to send Competitive Carting a notice of default and cure. The notice informed the company that it faces daily fines of $1,500 and the termination of its contract if the garbage collection disruption is not resolved.

Diana said originally that the contractor was given until Friday, July 7 to pick up garbage left on sidewalks.
“The point is,” he said, they needed to “get it done.”

Garbage left on the streets for the past few days is “an unacceptable health hazard,” Diana said.
Other than a hiccup in January when Competitive Carting began working in Yorktown — and residents experienced disruptions in the normal garbage and recycling collections — he said “everything was clicking along.
“And then it was like someone through a switch,” Diana said, “and it went haywire” when the phone started ringing last week.
He said the fact is that there should have been communication from the contractor, and silence is only preferred when everything is going smoothly.
“The simple thing is,” Diana said, “I don’t want to know we have a garbage company.”
