Christophe Galtier criticises VAR after tackle on Marco Verratti

Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain played out a 1-1 draw in their third group-stage match of the 2022/23 Champions League. Despite being a low-scoring game, the contest did not lack drama, with the controversy around Enzo Fernández’s tackle on Marco Verratti making the headlines in the aftermath of the affair.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, PSG manager Christophe Galtier did not hesitate to take a swipe at the VAR, suggesting that the tackle from the Argentinian could’ve broken the leg of the Italian midfielder. As quoted by L’Équipe, he said:

“I think the referee wasn’t helped by his assistants and VAR. Verratti might have had a broken leg. The referee is busy managing the game, he can make a mistake. But it was the assistants who should have alerted him because the player (Enzo Fernández) put both feet on Verratti’s leg.”

On Wednesday, Lionel Messi broke the deadlock for PSG in the 22nd minute of the match. An own goal, scored by Danilo Pereira, gave Benfica the much-needed equaliser. The French side could not mount a comeback as Galtier’s men had to share the spoils with their Portuguese counterparts at the end of the game.
