Gordon Solie, an icon figure of this industry who announced more pro wrestling matches on television than any man who ever lived, passed away from brain cancer officially on 7/28 at the age of 71. Solie was found that morning by his family, and it is being listed as the date of his death. It is believed his death may have taken place as early as late Wednesday night, as nobody heard from him on Thursday, and the house was exactly the same on Friday morning as it was on Wednesday night, when his daughter was over for dinner.

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

Though she wasn’t on SmackDown last night, WWE uploaded a video of Charlotte Flair from TV giving an update on Ric Flair’s condition and thanking people for the messages they’ve sent to her family. Charlotte said that her father has a long road ahead of him but that things are looking good and she wouldn’t be back if she didn’t think think it was okay to be.
Shelton Benjamin tweeted about his first match back with WWE on SmackDown last night: “The road back tough. Full of physical/mental high/lows. To hear the roar of the @WWEUniverse tonight made it all worth It.”
Next week’s SmackDown has Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Randy Orton in a number one contender’s match with the winner getting a future shot at Jinder Mahal’s WWE Championship. There will also be a Natalya vs. Carmella non-title match, with Naomi getting her rematch against Natalya for the title on the September 12th episode.
Nakamura noted that yesterday was the 15th anniversary of his pro wrestling debut. Kazuchika Okada replied that yesterday also marked 13 years since his debut.
IGN revealed the next 41 wrestlers who will be playable characters in WWE 2K18. They also posted video of what The Authors of Pain and Finn Balor’s entrances will look like in the video game.
Chris Jericho told Sports Illustrated that Roman Reigns may be the best wrestler in WWE.

Rosemary tweeted an update on the injury that she suffered from a legitimate armbar from Sexy Star at Triplemania. She wrote that the injury is less severe than anticipated, with it being a strained tricep/bicep with swelling around the area. She wrote that she’ll return to the ring when doctors are happy with her strength and range of motion, but that she’s optimistic that she won’t miss much time. The latter part of the statement was focused on moving on from the situation and focusing on the positives of the weekend.
GFW posted their own statement on the Rosemary/Sexy Star incident as well. Similarly, it focuses on the positives of Triplemania, the weekend, and their relationship with AAA. It says that AAA has confirmed that appropriate measures are being taken and that both the company and Sexy Star have apologized to Rosemary.
Kazuchika Okada topped this year’s Pro Wrestling Illustrated top 500. It’s the first time that a Japanese wrestler has ever finished at number one on the list.
William Ogletree, who suffered a head injury while being involved in a spinebuster spot at an unsanctioned wrestling event in Oklahoma City on Sunday night, has passed away. The Oklahoman previously reported that an investigation into the tragedy is underway.
Destiny Wrestling announced Pete Dunne vs. Johnny Mundo for their show in Toronto on October 15th.
Wrestle Circus is offering free tickets to their September 9th show to those displaced by Hurricane Harvey.
Keith Lee tweeted that he won’t be selling T-shirts for a while due to donating them to those in need in Houston after the hurricane.
The New Zealand Herald has a story on Candy Lee, who is the country’s first transgender pro wrestler.
The Palm Beach Post ran a story on the West Palm Beach Auditorium that mentions its history of hosting pro wrestling events.
UFC/MMA
In a conversation with Urijah Faber and Snoop Dogg that was streamed on Instagram, Dana White claimed that Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor did 6.5 million buys on pay-per-view. Dave Meltzer noted in his article for MMA Fighting that the 6.5 million would be the number internationally instead of just in North America.
McGregor wants Nate Diaz to come down to 155 pounds if they’re to meet in another fight. Ariel Helwani tweeted that Diaz is the current favorite to face McGregor next but that there’s a long ways to go for that to happen.
Ronda Rousey shared more photos of her and Travis Browne’s wedding.
Michael Chiesa has signed a new four-fight contract with the UFC.
