Spurs won the match 4-0 with Heung-min Son scoring twice, as Giovani Lo Celso and Christian Eriksen also found the net.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino made several changes to the team and fielded a defence made up of Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth.

Cascarino was less than impressed with what he saw from the back four.

He told The Times: “I hope Mauricio Pochettino is not expecting to rely too much on the back four he picked for Tottenham last night.

“They don’t convince me at all, and will surely concede plenty of goals if they are a given a run in the starting line-up. They have no chance of being in a team that will challenge for honours.

“Tottenham don’t really have a decent right back in the squad, Juan Foyth got the nod last night, after the summer departure of Kieran Trippier, but I would play Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in central defence and would select Ben Davies ahead of Danny Rose at left back.”

Alderweireld and Vertonghen were rested for the Champions League match with Red Star ahead of their league clash with Sheffield United at the weekend.
