Ahead of the game, Klopp’s assistant Pepijn Lijnders said: “For me consistency is the most important thing if you want to give players an opportunity.

“We have Ali as our number one, more than a number one, and Adrian did an unbelievable job for us. Caiomhin started this competition and he will start tomorrow.

“For his age as a goalkeeper, he is very stable. That’s what we like about him. We see a good future for him and want to give him his opportunity and you need these opportunities to grow.”

Kelleher, a 20-year-old from Cork, joined Liverpool from Ireland’s Ringmahon Rangers in 2015 and has since progressed from the academy to the first-team fold.

He has featured regularly for the Reds’ youth sides in recent years and made 11 Premier League 2 appearances for the Under-23s last season.

He received his first senior call-up to the Republic of Ireland national team in November 2018 but is yet to win his first cap.
