Dimitar Berbatov has bowed out of football with a colourful statement filled with the type of style Premier League fans grew accustomed to.

Berbatov had been without a club since leaving Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters last year, meaning his retirement was expected.

The former striker first arrived in England in 2006 when he joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen and signed for Manchester United in 2008 and Fulham in 2012.

In total, he scored 94 Premier League goals in 229 appearances and the 38-year-old uploaded a video of his overhead kick for United against Liverpool nine years ago to Instagram, before posting a longer statement.

“My last game was more then one year ago, so i think its the right time now to stop and its long overdue,” he wrote.

“Although when i think about it, its never The End, because i will stay in the game in one way or another, the time has come to say that after almost 20 years playing football i am stooping with my professional ACTIVE football career!
