Temper tantrums are unpleasant and disruptive behaviors or emotional outbursts of your kids. They are often in response to the unmet needs or desires of kids.  It is easy to defeat an enemy when we know the one. In this case, temper tantrums are our enemy. Tantrums usually begin in children months and getting 12 to 18 months and, getting worse between the ages of 2 to 3 years. At the age of 3 or 4 years, kids have much better language skills than babies, but their vocabulary is still not advanced enough to explain their feelings. Temper tantrums are attention-seeking behaviors. They can whine to get food, new toys, and extra candy, or maybe they just want your attention or our testing limits.

01. Let your kid feel comfortable

Kids often whine for a reason. It is important that you stay calm. Tantrums are not their fault. You and your kids are also not bad. You should let your kids feel that they are safe and comfortable.

As an example, if you are going out shopping wherever, you may have to accompany your little ones. You make sure that they are prepared for it. They should have enough sleep, enough food, and you have everything they might need with you. You can take a toy to the grocery store and it might save your kid from begging for another one.

If you are going out for a longer time, don’t forget to take your favorite blanket with you. It will give them a feeling of familiarity with home and safety. It will make you both feel comfortable and prepared for whatever may come your way.

02. Find out what’s really bothering your kid

This is really important for kids under two years and a half, as at this age their vocabulary of around 50 words. They can’t build a sentence out of them, but they still have cravings thoughts, and wishes, but, they can’t just announce to you. So, you don’t get their message and they don’t get your answer. 03. Distract your kid from the reason for tantrum

If you are sad or something is bothering you, it will feel better if you going out with friends or reading a book. It will help you set your mind on other things. In the same manner, kids have their own concerns as we know when they feel danger, their faces are reddening or they are giving other signs of a tantrum. Y

ou just distract them, unfollow them, or ask about going for a walk, reading their favorite book. These are all great ways to distract your child’s fleeting attention. Telling a little joke or making a funny face also can help.

04. Do not provoke tantrums

You might trigger temper tantrums unintentionally. So you can identify their triggering causes and escape from them. For example, your kid loves candy. But too much is not good for them. Then do not put them in their eyesight. Otherwise, you will aid to remind something you don’t want them to have?

Your kid doesn’t like to be forcefully interrupted or feels uncomfortable doing certain things. Give them a warning before they have to do it and explain why it is necessary. The activity itself might not last long. However, tantrums and bad moods may last for hours.

05. Let your kid choose  

It is a brilliant idea to let your child choose. This is not about making life-defining decisions like which house to move in or where to go on vacation. You can start with small things that will make him or her feel like they are in control. This means responsibility. They will learn how their choices affect, what they do, and how they do.

They will improve their decision making and problem-solving capabilities. You can also offer them alternatives to choose from. For example, After waking them up in the morning and you can offer to choose if they want to get dressed first or brush their teeth. They will have to do both eventually. But in this way, they will feel like they are given some choice.

06. Be a good teacher for your kids

Do you remember your favorite teacher? It is an amazing thing to become that favorite teacher for your own kid? First of all, stop being angry at them for throwing tantrums, a great teacher won’t be mad at you for not being good at complex subjects like physics.

You can teach your little one how to overcome frustration, show them that drawing, reading a book, or cuddling with their favorite toy. It will help them to feel better. You can teach words which much better heard and understood than screaming.    Kids really want to do what is right but, sometimes they just don’t know what that explains their concerns and fears. 

Never yell in front of your kid. You could even make up an angry vocabulary for your kid that would be a list of words to express negative emotions.

07. Always use positive words

Your kids feel more comfortable when using positive words instead of negative. Please don’t scream every time with negative words like, “No”, “don’t”, “stop”, “don’t do it”. If you want to tell “don’t jump on the couch”, it will motivate your kid to do the opposite, especially if they are moody.

Instead of that, you could say, “son, the furniture is for sitting. You can go outside if you want to jump”. It sounds much better and is unlikely to lead to a conflict.

08. Keep a straight face

You can introduce the new family rules to your kid when he or she starts whining. You have all right not to respond to them if they act wrongly, keep your face straight. You are also able to introduce a warning sign which will show you are going to stop listening. you can shake your head, pull your ear, it could be anything you choose.

09. Give praise when the kid deserves it

Appropriate and timely admiration is a good way to make your child positive. You tell them things like “thank you for using your normal voice” or “I love to hear your calm voice” do. You can thank you for the most basic things. You can motivate them to behave well in exchange for little treats. 

It is better to tell your boy if he makes it through family dinner without whining you will let him watch his favorite cartoon right after.

10. When you seek medical help

If temper tantrums are getting worse and it’s beyond your control, you can seek medical help. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends you to seek a pediatrician or family physician if,

  • Tantrums get worse after the age of 4 years
  • Your kid injures him or herself, others, or destroys properties during tantrums
  • Your child holds their breaths during tantrums or getting faint
  • If kids have nightmares, a reversal of toilet training, headaches, and anxieties or refuse to go to bed or eat.
